Sligo Youth Celebration of Ministry

Sabbath School

Youth Sabbath School meets every Sabbath at 10 a.m. in the Youth Room. The Sligo Youth Directors (SYD) takes the young adult quarterly and presents it in a creative and thought-provoking way.

Youth Vespers

This program occurs on the first three Fridays of every month from 6:00-7:30 p.m.Programs are open to all high-school aged youth (13-18).

First Fridays: “Vespers,” a program with a guest speaker, praise and worship, and fellowship.

Second Fridays: “Open Forum,” an open dialogue where youth can ask questions and respond to the topic in a free environment.

Third Fridays: “Total Scripture,” Bible Study that teaches youth how to study the Bible. Going verse-by-verse, we explore the “who, what, where, when, why and how” of the Bible.

Youth Choir

Sligo Youth Choir rehearses each Friday from 4:15-5:45pm. The choir sings a variety of Christian music including contemporary, traditional, and Gospel.

Sligo Underground (Youth Church)

Sligo Underground, our youth church service, occurs almost every Sabbath! This service happens in the Youth Room, during the main church service and is geared towards high-school aged youth. This service uses various formats to engage the youth in worship and give them a venue to worship God freely in a space and service that is their own.

Outreach

Sligo Youth has an energetic and active outreach ministry. Sligo Youth concentrates 90% of outreach efforts in the DC and Langley Park area, doing at least one service project a month to reach the homeless, hungry, elderly, environment, and ESOL populations. The Outreach Team also responds to local disasters, such as the Piney Branch Fire or extreme cold weather/snowstorms. Graduating youth often mention a service project as one of their defining moments from the youth group.

In the summer, Sligo Youth goes on a mission trip. Most of them are domestic, with previous locations being New Jersey, Indianapolis, West Virginia, Michigan, and Puerto Rico. Undoubtedly, the annual mission trip is a powerful program. So much work is put in, from volunteer chaperones to financial supporters. But you may never find a better return on your investment. Youth are placed in a new environment, pushed to their limits, and grow their faith, confidence, and character. Disconnected from DC, they get the opportunity to truly connect with team members and locals, seeing the true state of society and practicing humble, unconditional love.

Social

Friends can be the most influential force in a teenager’s life. For this reason, SY regularly sponsors socials and trips, giving the youth opportunity to bond with our leaders and each other. Examples include game nights, bowling, DC excursions, and overnight trips.
