Philosophy of the Adventurer Program

The Adventurer program was created to assist parents in their important responsibilities as a child’s primary teachers and evangelizers. The program is part of the Sligo Growing Great Kids Ministry, which aims to strengthen the parent/child relationship and to further the child’s development in spiritual, physical, mental, and social areas. Through the Adventurer Program, the church, home, and school can work together with the parent to develop a mature, happy child.

The church’s greatest resource is our children; therefore, it is imperative that as a church we meet the challenge to provide a program for our children during their early, formative years. We want right habits, thoughts, motives, dispositions, and attitudes to be established. The Wise Man wrote, “Bring up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.” Prov. 22:6 (NIV). This is more than a cliché—it is a scientific formula.

The Uniqueness of the Adventurer Club.

The Adventurer Club gives children an opportunity to belong to an organized peer group. To join, children are invited to participate in various activities which will improve their social skills. From the time children start school until they reach puberty, their need to be with and be accepted by their peer group is increasingly strong.

The Adventurer Club involves children in grades Pre-K to 4th grade and their parents. The programming and planning for Adventurers is simple and short, but creative. Parental involvement provides opportunities for parents to participate in the learning experience.

One of the Adventurer Club objectives is to provide a meaningful and exciting experience as the children look forward with anticipation to someday being Pathfinders.

The club is composed of three different sections according to age and grade:

Little Lambs – 3.5 to 4 years of age – Pre-K

Eager Beavers – 5 years of age – Kindergarten

Adventurers – 6 to 9 years of age – 1st to 4th Grade

Busy Bee – 6 years of age

Sunbeam – 7 years of age

Builder – 8 years of age

Helping Hands – 9 years of age

Sligo Explorers Description of Each Meeting.

The Explorers club meets once a month on every third Saturday from 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm and it begins with a potluck lunch and continues with the meeting activities.  A child joins in a progressive class, which teaches them in four different areas as the year moves along.  Lessons are taught through a variety of techniques including workbooks, puzzles, crafts and games.

For Parents

A parenting class, using the Help I’m A Parent program developed by Dr.’s Claudia and Pamela Consuegra from the North American Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, is also offered during the meetings every month. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of this class because it provides great information, insights, and resources to assist parents on their parenting journey.
